“I’ve been in the game a long time, but I’ve always considered myself a student,” sagt G. Love. “Finishing this album with Keb Mo’ felt like graduation.”
Das neue Album wurde in Nashville aufgenommen, produziert und co-komponiert von Keb Mo. Dabei ließ sich G. Love von einigen Ehrengästen wie Robert Randolph, Marcus King und Roosevelt Collier unterstützen. G. Love´s Texte auf “The Juice” sind sowohl persönlich als auch politisch. Dabei singt er über Wertschätzung für die einfachen Freuden des Lebens mit der gleichzeitigen Verpflichtung sich für Gleichheit und Gerechtigkeit einzusetzen.
“I’ve always tried to make music that’s a force for positivity,” erklärt G. Love. “It was important to me that this album be something that could empower the folks who are out there fighting the good fight every day. I wanted to make a rallying cry for empathy and unity.”
Geboren als Garrett Dutton in Philadelphia wuchs G.Love gleichermaßen begeistert von Folk, Blues und Rap auf und hörte die Platten von Lead Belly und Run D.M.C. bis John Hammond und den Beastie Boys rauf und runter. Irgendwann verschlug es ihn nach Boston und er brachte mit seiner Band Special Sauce 1994 ihr selbstbetiteltes Debüt raus. In den nächsten 25 Jahren brachte G. Love sieben weitere hoch gelobte Studioalben mit Special Sauce (Plus vier Soloalben) heraus. In dieser Zeit arbeitete er auch mit den unterschiedlichsten Künstlern wie Lucinda Williams, Dave Matthews, The Avett Brothers, Jack Johnson und DJ Logic zusammen.
“Keb Mo’ and I got signed to the same label at the same time back when I first started out, and we toured together early on in my career,” G. Love remembers. “He used to introduce me onstage as ‘a true American original,’ and I could tell that he got a kick out of what I did. We didn’t see each other for a while after that, but a few years ago we reconnected and did a co-headline tour, which was really special for me.
Zwei Jahrzehnte nachdem sie zum ersten Mal zusammen auf Tour waren, machten sie jetzt genau dort weiter wo sie aufgehört hatten. Nach einigen Jam-Sessions schlossen sich die beiden mit Grammy Gewinner Gary Nicholson zusammen und nahmen einige Demos auf.
“I got wrapped up in touring and in my Jamtown project with Donovan Frankenreiter and Cicso Adler after that first session, and even though I really enjoyed working with Keb Mo’ and Gary, it was a year-and-a-half before I was able to get back down to Nashville to finish writing the album with them.”
