Am 06.12., erschien Courtney Barnett „MTV UNPLUGGED LIVE IN MELBOURNE“ digital, die physische Veröffentlichung folgt am 21.02.2020 via Marathon Artists.
Am 22. Oktober 2019 führte Courtney Barnett auf Einladung von MTV Australia in ihrer Heimatstadt Melbourne eine einzigartige und besondere Show auf. Die „Unplugged“ Performance zeigt Barnett, wie man sie noch nie zuvor gehört hat: warm, verletzlich und emotional.
Courtney Barnett sagt über ihre Performance “I love playing to Melbourne crowds…I wanted to have a mixture of old songs, new songs and covers, and tracks that we don’t perform all the time – it’s been interesting to see the songs through a different filter, and it brings out this other emotional side to the music and the lyrics”, und führt fort: “Unplugged is so nostalgic for me. We had two Unplugged Records in our CD collection growing up and I know those records inside out because we listened to them every day.”
Unter einer Lichterkette und einem Baldachin aus Blumen spielte Barnett ein mitreißendes Set von acht Songs, darunter „Depreston“, „Avant Gardener“ und „Sunday Roast“. Neben ihrer üblichen Band, bestehend aus Dave Mudie und Bones Sloane, verpflichtete sie auch die Cellistin Lucy Waldron. Barnett machte die Nacht noch ikonischer, indem sie einige ihrer Lieblingsmusiker zur Zusammenarbeit einlud, darunter den legendären Songwriter Paul Kelly, den Neuseeländer Marlon Williams und Evelyn Ida Morris. Die Auftritte umfassten Cover von Leonard Cohen, Archie Roach und Seeker Lover Keeper sowie einen noch nie zuvor gehörten neuen Song von Courtney selbst mit dem Titel „Play It On Repeat“.
